…Some trivia: I always thought Tom Waits was clever to come up with the line "In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is King" but that came from Vonnegut in "Player "Piano. I especially appreciated "Breakfast of Champions" because he inserted himself into the book as a character and stated that writing the book prevented him from killing himself like his mother. It helped me not kill myself as well.
Meanwhile, the world outside of the Vonnegut Museum is performing an homage to him by attempting to recreate Harrison Bergeron. I became a Vonnegut fan at age 12 when I tried to check out Breakfast of Champions from the local library, and they sent me home with a permission slip for my mom to sign instead. So of course I had to read all of his books. Then had to reread them a few years later to understand them.…
Breakfast of Champions by Vonnegut. I've read a ton of books in my life, but for some reason never took the plunge into Vonnegut. I was utterly awe struck by this book. I think every person has a small list of things that…
…that, although Douglas Adams made famous a character he created called Marvin the depressed robot. I think depression in a person is a good test of sentience. You might be interested in Kurt Vonnegut's "Breakfast of Champions" (not the movie with Bruce Willis, which is an abomination) in which he feels everyone but himself is a robot and considers killing himself until he meets an artist who restores his faith in the creative…
For the specific term “NPC” maybe, but the idea of “There is a main character and every one else is a machine” goes back much further - Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions (1973) tackles the idea in a particularly humorous way. (Not too much of a spoiler I hope, in classic Vonnegut fashion the bottom line is delivered up front and the rest book is about getting there) Note:…
