Anne McCaffrey wrote a series of novels (Dragonriders of Pern) based around fire breathing alien dragons. Their method of producing fire was to digest phosphine rich rocks in a dedicated stomach and then emit phosphine gas which would spontaneously combust when…
There is a lot of crossing between Fantasy and Sci-fi in the early stories. The John Carter of Mars stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs have some weird technology with sword and sorcery tropes, IIRC. McCaffrey’s most famous books were the Dragonriders of Pern series (currently the subject of a Tor.com reread led by the incomparable Mari Ness). But, while the subject of only six short tales, one of McCaffrey’s most memorable characters was Helva (also called…
…character's daily journey in the book. The article (almost) footnotes her other work which was equally impressive: * She also created atlases for the worlds of fantasy authors Anne McCaffrey, creator of the “Dragonriders of Pern” series, and Stephen R. Donaldson, who wrote “The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant” series.
