I don't like this advice. For one because I would have missed out on some incredible books. (the first one that comes to mind for me is Roberto Bolaño's 2666, I struggled with the first part, the rest blew me away). But more importantly to me this seems like a mindset that centers around quick gratification. Perseverance is a useful skill. Thinking the author…
…Infinite Jest was a way of letting it all come out in a Kerouacian-stream without much thought for concision. If it helps anyone decide whether to give it a go, two recent books I read and loved were 2666 by Roberto Bolaño, and Underworld by Don DeLillo, and Infinite Jest is satisfying me in the hard-earned way they both did.
Roberto Bolaño
2666 by Roberto Bolano Yeah, believe the hype. Definitely the most important novel of this century. The story revolves around the deaths of over 500 women and children in a small border town in Mexico. Absolutely…

…trace of subjectivism that Shakespeare is the most important writer of the English language, or Kafka the most important writer in modern German, etc. Maybe this is slightly less rigorous in the case of '2666' which is still a relatively young work, but it is widely hailed as a landmark novel.
…first time I played Half-Life 2. These games feel less like a movie I've seen or a story I've read and more like somewhere I've been. This isn't unique to video games—I've had the same feeling from, say, 2666 or Stalker—but video games seem especially well-suited to do this as a medium.
