不管怎么说，按任何标准来看，《屠场》（The Jungle）都是经典，《Dau》也是经典，《下站》（Downbelow Station）以及 Cherryh 的大部分其他作品、霍雷肖·霍恩布洛尔系列、《新日之书》（The Book of the New Sun）、《严厉的月亮》（The Moon is a Harsh Mistress）、《莱博维茨的赞歌》（A Canticle for Leibowitz）、《海伯利安》（Hyperion）、《里德利·沃克》（Riddley Walker）、《盲视》（Blindsight）……
Sci-fi/fantasy are overrepresented, but "narrowly-focused"? I'm interested in what you think that focus is? Anyway, The Jungle is a classic by any measure, Dau is a classic, Downbelow Station and most of the rest of Cherryh's catalog, Horatio Hornblower, The Book of the New Sun, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, A Canticle for Leibowitz, Hyperion, Riddley Walker, Blindsight... I could keep going…
The only book I put aside without finishing (Downbelow Station by C.J.Cherryh) was recommended to me again years later and when I did pick it up I found it gripping. I really recommend you try Report on Probability A again, it was one of the best books I ever read!
Cherryh 的《下站》（Downbelow Station）；John Brunner 的《站在桑给巴尔》（Stand in Zanzibar）；L.E. Modesitt Jr 的《Adiamante》；Sean McMullen 的《巨机中的灵魂》（Souls in the Great Machine）；Larry Niven 的“已知空间”（Known Space）系列，以及他和 Jerry Pournelle 的全部合作作品……

…many books on this list that are (IMHO) overrated, largely for nostalgic reasons. I also find some authors missing that really should be represented, most notably the prolific CJ Cheeryh whose books Downbelow Station and Cyteen are both noteworthy and stand the test of time. Some books on this list stand the test of time very well. Ender's Game, any of the Iain M. Banks' Culture novels, Hyperion to name a few.
…Her Merchanter books are really good, and although there is some weird alien stuff, in general the space travel and combat, as well as economic issues in space, are handled quite well. I'd start with Downbelow Station.
