I had Microsoft Encarta that came with the PC, I had a book called Internet For Dummies, and I had virtually unlimited access to information. I also ate once every 2 days, and it was rice and shitty meat more often than not. I won't say where I am today, but I will say that it all worked…
…tons of hours poring over many FAQs that I got by doing "ftp rtfm.mit.edu" and then going to the FAQs section, downloading and reading them. I even bought a book about using the Internet (I think it was Internet for Dummies :), also bought Modems for Dummies, to learn how to use my dial-up modem at home with my PC) and from one of those books, found this great resource called "Accessing the Internet by Email". It had ways…

I had Microsoft Encarta that came with the PC, I had a book called Internet For Dummies, and I had virtually unlimited access to information. This was a breakthrough moment for me also. The local ISP offered shell or SLIP accounts, but SLIP was more expensive so I had a shell account.…
I remember having AOL back in the very early web days, just after they added the browser. My dad had an "Internet for Dummies" book, which had a directory of websites to try. I, as maybe a 10 year old, could not properly type all the characters in the URL correctly and I gave up on this so-called World Wide Web. It seemed way…
…help & outsiders who pitched in, but I'd also say that this all-ness we can connect to has some of the least guidelines, terrible ability to orient oneself or understand or decypher it. Ateasy growing up Internet For Dummies was a book and covered a decent fraction of what we might find. Now that all society is here the guidebook to the internet it's use and it's dangers is vastly deeper.
