David Harvey has a fantastic book on this, "A Brief History of Neoliberalism", it's quite a read but it's very well structured and I'd recommend it to anyone looking to investigate the recent (by this I mean second half of the 20th c.) trends in global capitalism and society.
…criticise neoliberalism as being uncaring of the poor, the Marxist would say a similar thing about social democracy. For a read by a thinker inspired by Marx, I've heard good things about David Harvey's A Brief History of Neoliberalism. I have not read it, so I don't know if I should recommend it, but since you mentioned modern Marxists, and he is one, it may be of some use to you. This is an interview with David Harvey whose Brief History of Neoliberalism is one of the best primers on the subject. https://www.jacobinmag.com/2016/07/david-harvey-neoliberalis...
It is very peculiar. Whether it is an attempt to "reclaim" the word or not, that subreddit's usage of "neoliberal" bears little relation it's usage as defined in books such as David Harvey's 'A Brief History of Neoliberalism', where it is most commonly associated with privatization, financialisation, tax cuts, the retrenchment of social welfare and rapid growth in inequality. Critically, the neoliberal state is not 'smaller',…

[0] https://newleftreview.org/II/49/alain-badiou-the-communist-h...

https://www.jacobinmag.com/2016/07/david-harvey-neoliberalis...

'A Brief History of Neoliberalism' by David Harvey is also an excellent book on the subject.
