The Art of Software Testing by Glenford Myers has an excellent language-agnostic checklist. See the chapter on “walkthroughs”
…designing long-term architectures. Excellent coffee table book "Envisioning Information" by Edward Tufte "Walt Disney" by Neal Gabler Excellent biography of maybe the greatest imagineer ever "The Art of Software Testing" by Glenford J. Myers ~100 page classic. The central premise is that the successful test is one that finds bugs/issues not one that doesn't.

For some classic wisdom about writing tests see the classic "Art of Software Testing" by Glenford Myers. It's $149+++ on Amazon, but only $5 on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p3671980.m... This was originally published before TDD was a thing, but is highly applicable.
I found Art of Software testing to be a good guide on the subject. I recommend reading it.
Generally speaking, you can reduce the combinatorics in tests by using techniques like cause effect graphing (from The Art of Software Testing). It also contains notation for cases that "can't happen". It's very technical so I'm not sure if it will solve your problem.
