The Smoking Gnu! Pratchett was genuinely interested CS and crammed an unusually high amount of modern tech references into his books. The imp-powered PDA devices from Jingo still bring tears to my eyes.
我一个朋友完全迷上了碟形世界系列。我刚借了《Jingo》,对其成熟度印象深刻。(成熟是指呈现的思想。幽默是荒诞且恰到好处的傻气)Pratchett 不如 Douglas Adams 那么伟大,但肯定足够接近了。
A friend of mine has been completely obsessed with the Discworld books. I just borrowed "Jingo" and was impressed with how mature it was.(Mature in the ideas presented. The humor is absurd and appropriately silly) Pratchett isn't quite as great as Douglas Adams but is certainly close enough.
……在他那个时代的社会背景下,它们确实是经典),但我觉得读起来并不总是令人愉悦——他给人的感觉就像是没了幽默感的普拉切特(Pratchett)。普拉切特心里是有怒火的(你读《小神》或《战争狂热》(Jingo)不可能感受不到那种愤怒),但他对人类经历的态度更为温和。话虽如此,我们这里专门讨论的是英语专业的学生——我可不指望任何英语国家的普通大众……
…society in his time they are indeed classics) but not something I'd say is always pleasurable reading - he feels like Pratchett without the humour, Pratchett had the rage (you can't read say Small Gods or Jingo and not sense the rage) but was warmer about the human experience. That said we are specifically talking about English majors here - I wouldn't expect an average member of any English speaking country…
……鲍吉斯(Boggis)。> “雇佣兵的问题在于,”贵族(Patrician)说道,“你得付钱他们才肯开打。而且除非你运气爆棚,否则到头来你得花更多的钱才能让他们停下来——”(出自特里·普拉切特爵士的《战争狂热》(Jingo)一书)。
…Boggis. > 'The problem with mercenaries,' said the Patrician, 'is that they need to be paid to start fighting. And, unless you are very lucky, you end up paying them even more to stop -' (from the book Jingo by Sir Terry Pratchett).
我的意思是,特里·普拉切特(极其著名的英文作家)写过一本直接就叫《Jingo》的书 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jingo_(novel) 。这不是个每天都能听到的词,但我敢打赌绝大多数真正有文化的人都认得这个词。
I mean Terry Pratchett (very popular English language author) wrote a book literally called Jingo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jingo_(novel) It's not a word you'd hear every day but it's a word I'd bet on the majority of genuinely literate people to understand.
…adjective TTR below a defined threshold, occurring approximately ten years before Pratchett’s formal diagnosis. The diagnosis was announced in 2007, meaning the shift occurred in 1997. 1997 was after Jingo and before Carpe Jugulum and The Last Continent, and 2007 was after Making Money and before Unseen Academicals. The Last Continent is the first identified in the paper as below the cutoff for adjectives…
