…addition to stephenson, the books i come back to over and over again for comfort and wisdom include: - Lord of the Rings: The other bible. Not even the very wise can see all ends; be of good cheer. - A Wrinkle In Time: 9 year old me, there is such a thing as a tesseract, and there is also Mrs. Beast. - The Master and Margarita: apocalyptic reading from someone who knew, and a cat who always pays his way. - the Discworld…
A Wrinkle In Time, by Madeleine L'Engle I probably read it in fourth or fifth grade, not too many years after it was published. It was definitely the first science fiction novel I ever read. It wasn't until many years…

[1]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Brain [2]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Swift,_Jr. [3]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Investigators……
…Pretty much anything by Jules Verne, especially The Mysterious Island. Definitely some HG Wells, and definitely some Choose Your Own Adventure books (anybody remember The Cave of Time?) Glad to see A Wrinkle in Time and The Mad Scientists Club on the list. Those were awesome reads as a kid.
A Wrinkle in Time, and to a lesser extent rest of the L'Engle Time Quartet. Taught me very early on about physics, time, creativity, nonconformity, love, and the mystery and wonder of the universe.
