This reminds me of the 1997 book Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman. (Wikipedia says there's also a 1999 BBC television adaption, available on YouTube.)
…80s Britain I never felt this. The author thinks people can only identify with characters like themselves, which is condescending. "That is changing now, albeit slowly: books such as Malorie Blackman’s Pig Heart Boy, Patrice Lawrence’s triumphant People Like Stars and Tola Okogwu’s Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun" Three British authors! [1] the British definition of middle class.
When I was a teenager there was a novel adapted for TV by the BBC called “Pig Heart Boy”. It explored the emotional impact of this type of procedure on a teenager and the response from the public, both good and bad. I don’t remember much about it but it looks like it won a BAFTA. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_Heart_Boy

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_Heart_Boy
