…and science. Ruby is not a particularly good vehicle for this approach, it is heavy on the art. A book and course showed up here recently that covers some of the science in a beginner friendly manner: A Practical Theory of Programming (http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~hehner/aPToP/). Unfortunately the material on combining the art and science of software and applying them to practical business problems is a little thin. I'd like to contribute…
…formal methods, oh, where shall I even begin? The amount of time to turn something intuitive into correct predicate logic can be prohibitive to most of professionals. HN used to feature Eric Hehner's Practical Theory of Programming. I actually read through his book. I could well spend hours specifying a searching condition even though I could solve the search problem in a few minutes. And have you checked out the model checking…
…as nice and pretty as the textbook examples. The working world was quite a comedown later on. Maybe a crazy idea, but Dijkstra's A Discipline of Programming was meant for coding on paper. Hehner's A Practical Theory of Programming is kind of similar and more recent -- I haven't read it.
