…is just a short warnings about how so much of the above was GNU specific. I prefer the BSD make man page, but obviously that is not a good starting point for someone new to make. I recommend the book "Managing Projects with make" personally.

I bought what seemed to be overstock or maybe it was just being remaindered in a 50%-off Uni Bookshop sale about 20 years ago. It's a tiny (80 page) little book called "Managing Projects with make" by Steve Talbot and printed by O'Reilly and Associates. Most of what I know about 'make' I learned from this book.
It says that Archive.org is producing pdfs of these books, but I'm not having any luck finding the Managing Projects with Make as a pdf. Anyone else see it? EDIT: I misunderstood, it's at archive.org's openlibrary project: http://openlibrary.org/works/OL3823216W/Managing_projects_wi...

Andy Oram's Managing Projects with Make is my goto reference, but there's a market for a make cookbook, I bet.
