Hacker News

…me wiser about how evil works. "Evil" is a fun word to throw around and lends itself to silly political slogans, but the real thing is no joke, is out there, and does not look like what you think. 3. _Eugene Onegin_, by Pushkin, as translated by Douglas Hofstadter (yes, that one). The man taught himself Russian by translating the Onegin to distract himself after his wife died. The foreword-essay changed how I regard…

  • ……赛斯的《金门》是一部既聪明机智、妙趣横生又感人至深的小说,背景设在80年代初的硅谷。令人惊叹的是,它全书用诗体写成,完全沿用了普希金那部俄国经典巨作《叶甫盖尼·奥涅金》的押韵格律。赛斯当时读了英译本,爱不释手,于是决定用诗体写一本现代美国小说。他把这个不走寻常路的想法执行得非常棒。

…Seth's _The Golden Gate_ is a smart, funny and moving novel set in the Silicon Valley of the early 80ies. Astonishingly, it's written in verse, in the rhyme scheme of the classic Russian masterpiece _Eugene Onegin_ by Pushkin, which Seth read in translation and loved so much he decided to write a modern American novel in verse. His execution of this unorthodox idea is terrific.

  • ……挑选一段你喜欢的希伯来文学英译本并进行比对。然后我就想到了附带链接里的那篇文章,它是对亚历山大·普希金的诗体小说《叶甫盖尼·奥涅金》的四个不同英译本所做的对比。这篇文章的作者是印第安纳大学认知科学与比较文学教授道格拉斯·侯世达,他有一本文集叫《Metamagical……

…English translations of a piece of Hebrew Literature you like and comparing them. Then I remembered the linked article, which is a comparison of four different English translations of the verse novel Eugene Onegin, by Alexander Pushkin. The article was written by Douglas Hofstadter, a professor of cognitive science and comparative literature at Indiana University who has an essay collection called Metamagical…

  • ……在写作时被抛在一边,数学所唤起的那种情感也完全没有必要被“翻译”成更让人熟悉的日常感受。(附注:顺便提一句,侯世达翻译的普希金《叶甫盖尼·奥涅金》同样极度放飞自我,读起来特别过瘾。当然,你最好先读两本别的译本,并放在手边备查,以熟悉具体内容,但就纯粹的文字游戏而言……

…be set aside when writing, nor is it necessary for the kinds of feelings that mathematics evokes to be “translated” into more familiar ones. (Edit: As an aside, Hofstadter's translation of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin is similarly self-indulgent, and a joy to read. Of course one ought to read a couple of other translations first and keep them nearby, to become familiar with the content, but in terms of sheer wordplay…

  • ……串联在一起,精巧的双关语似乎铺垫了整整300页,等等。总而言之,这本书纯粹就是侯世达自己在自得其乐。(我对侯世达翻译的普希金《叶甫盖尼·奥涅金》也是这个印象——我至少读过另外三个译本;侯世达的可能不是最符合字面原意的,但读起来绝对酸爽,而且押韵极其离谱:除了他谁会把“debts”(债务)拿去和“Till his creditors……”押韵?

…together, elaborate puns seem to be set up over a course of 300 pages, etc. All in all, it is a book just simply of Hofstadter having fun. (I had the same impression of Hofstadter's translation of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin — I've read at least three other translations; Hofstadter's may not be most literal but it's surely enjoyable and with the most outrageous rhymes: who else would rhyme "debts" with "Till his creditors…

  • ……内特·银的《信号与噪声》。读起来挺有意思,但感觉分析得有点浮于表面。当时我想看点虚构类作品,于是拿起了弗拉基米尔·纳博科夫翻译的亚历山大·普希金的《叶甫盖尼·奥涅金》。现在还说不好觉得怎么样,但读读纳博科夫的分析、稍微窥探一下他的心路历程还是挺有意思的。这也对理解他自己的作品有些启发。

…Signal and The Noise by Nate Silver. It was an interesting read, but it felt a bit shallow in it's analysis. I was feeling the need for some fiction, so I picked up Vladimir Nabokov's translation of Eugene Onegin by Aleksandr Pushkin. Not sure what to think about it yet, but it's interesting reading Nabokov's analysis and seeing into his mindset a little. Sheds some light on his work as well.
