For a fictional macro version of the Margulis hypothesis, I'd recommend 'Alien Clay' by Adrian Tchaikovsky

While reading Pushing Ice a very common thought I had was "did Reynolds want to do a Rama sequels?" Shroud is great, easy recommendation. Another of Tchaikovsky, Alien Clay, also great, also very alien.
I don't think I've been disappointed by anything from Adrian Tchaikovsky, tbh. Alien Clay and Service Model are also great.
Adrian Tchaikovsky’s “Final Architecture” series is lots of fun. I also highly recommend the two “Bioforms” books. For standalone novels, I liked “Alien Clay” and “Doors of Eden” the most. For novellas, “Walking to Aldebaran” and “Elder Race”. Thank you for recommending “Implied Spaces” as well. Walter Jon Williams seems like a new author for me to follow.
《The Stars are Legion》和《Alien Clay》是我去年读过最好的两本科幻小说，感觉它们都没上过什么书单，虽然殊不知后者可是《时间之子》（Children of Time）作者的又一部第一次接触（first contact）题材力作，那本书可是…
The Stars are Legion and Alien Clay are the two best sci-fi books I've read in the last year and I don't think they've shown up on any lists, although the latter is another first contact book by the author of Children of Time which has…
