…firmer ground, in large part because they have more data and it's easier to accumulate it. If you want a very readable introduction to price theory, which is a large part of microeconomics check out "Hidden Order" by David D. Friedman. It's based on his Price Theory textbook but rewritten for interest and readability. If you want something a bit more mathematically sophisticated, (basic calculus) look at Intermediate…
"Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell is the easiest to read, accurate introduction I have read. "Hidden Order: The Economics of Everyday Life" by David Friedman requires a little more work. Several previous commentors have recommended Hayek's "Road to Freedom", but I think his last book, "The Fatal Conceit"…
Sowell's Basic Economics is the easiest to read one I have seen, and for the math phobic it has no equations. Another really good, if idiosyncratic, book is David Friedman's Hidden Order: The Economics of Everyday Life. Also Thomas Sowell's Knowledge and Decisions covers roughly the same ground as Hayek's Use of Knowledge in Society, but is newer and more readable.
For a readable introduction, I don't know of any better than Thomas Sowell's Basic Economics or David Friedman's Hidden Order: The Economics of Everyday Life (David Friedman's textbook Price Theory: An Intermediate Text is almost as readable and is here: http://www.daviddfriedman.com/Academic/Price_Theory/PThy_ToC... )
…attest they are all excellent (although with varying degree of readability). This is the exact sort of list if you want to see multiple perspectives and challenge yourself. I also want to shout out to Hidden Order, which I was really surprised to see here, but is really quite the gem. More than any other econ book, I have pulled off the shelf and gone through the much dog-eared pages. It does an amazing job of…
…background in economics" Interesting. I recently came to the same conclusion (for myself anyways) - my thinking became a lot bigger after reading (addmittedly pop-)economics books like Freakonomics, Hidden Order (the better of the two IMHO), etc. It's not perfect, but I have yet to see a better explanation than the utility-maximizing principle (I made up that name but you get the idea). The key is to remember…
