…attenuated. It's very hard to write a novel that explores what it means for scientists to encounter the limits of scientific rationality as we understand it. Interestingly, (and apropos) McCarthy's last, Stella Maris, I think, did a much more eloquent job of exploring the same themes. Stella Maris is astounding, it's cosmic horror without the 'supernatural.' Instead there's only Gödel and Metzinger.
I suggest giving Cormac McCarthy’s final novels, the pair The Passenger and Stella Maris, a read. With these feelings, you might find that they read very powerfully for you.
I finally got round to reading The Passenger and the companion piece Stella Maris. Cormac McCarthy still had it even in his late 80's. Not quite as good as his earlier novels but still very sharp.
The Road was the first of his books I read. I read his last two books The Passenger and Stella Maris shortly after he passed. Both contained interesting thoughts on philosophy, science, mathematics. Of the two, I think Stella Maris was better - it's kind of a deep dive into genius and the madness that…
"The Passenger" and "Stella Maris" by Cormac McCarthy are fantastic. In general, I enjoy McCarthy's work because I believe he manages to present interesting ideas drawn from philosophy and religion, and if you read between the lines of…
Stella Maris, volume 2 of his most recent two volume novel, and The Road, have blown my mind. SM in particular focuses on a math prodigy committed to a mental asylum. I think it would speak to many people here. I'm…
