The Children of Húrin的“宏大传说”,故事背景设定在The Lord of the Rings之前的传奇时代。

I realize this is subjective, but I didn't get that feel at all from The Children of Hurin. I thought it did a pretty good job of capturing Tolkien's style (and, of course, significant passages were taken verbatim, or nearly so, from the shorter versions in The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales).
……骑着战象、身上涂着彩绘的哈拉德人(Haradrim),还有字面意义上根本不配算人的半兽人。那些主张和平的人都是些奸诈的蠢货、懦夫或是叛徒。但这并不会妨碍我一遍遍重读《精灵宝钻》、《霍比特人》、《指环王》和《胡林的儿女》。不过托尔金也是受限于他所处时代与环境的人,我们应该在肯定其优秀品质的同时,也不无视其局限。但要是直接给托尔金扣上法西斯的帽子,对我来说实在有点太扯了。{评论者见 http://lorenrosson.blogspot.com/2006/06/tolkien-fascist.html}
…elephant riding painted Haradrim, the literally subhuman orcs. Those counseling peace are perfidious fools, cowards or traitors. This won't keep me from rereading The Simirilian, The Hobbit, LOTR and the Children of Hurin. But Tolkien was a man of his time and place and we should appreciate his virtues without ignoring his vices. Calling Tolkien himself a fascist is quite a few bridges too far for me. {commenter at http://lorenrosson.blogspot.com/2006/06/tolkien-fascist.html}
……Joel Kotkin 写的《Warning to the Global Middle Class》,书里的不少担忧我也深有同感。轻松一点的则有《书店日记》(The Diary Of A Bookseller,Shaun Bythell 著)、《书店杂役》(A Factotum in the Book Trade,Shaun Bythell 著)、《胡林的儿女》(Children of Hurin,托尔金 著)
…Warning to the Global Middle Class by Joel Kotkin and I share many of its worries. On a more light hearted side The Diary Of A Bookseller (Shaun Bythell) A Factotum in the Book Trade (Shaun Bythell) Children of Hurin (Tolkien)
It can certainly be an acquired (or reacquired) taste. If you want a different type of Tolkien story - the children of Hurin is tragic as anything the Greeks wrote.
I have obsessively read the Silmarillion and the Children of Hurin, and they are overarchingly the same, just in different formats. The Silmarillion is written like a history book; the Children of Hurin is written like a novel. I never got through the poem of Beren…
