If you're into Historical novels, there are two books that take place during the Avignon papacy: The Dream of Scipio (Iain Pears) and the series The Accursed Kings (Maurice Druon). The first one is quite well written (being a Iain Pears novel), and both are fairly accurate with regard to the period, being written by historians.

Read Maurice Druon's books called The Accursed Kings. It explains a lot about the topic and also sheds light on some of the happenings today ;).
