Not to take away from the perfectly adequate linked article, but as a philosophical musing on keeping goats, it reminded me of the fabulous book "Goatwalking" by Jim Corbett. It's a hard to describe book that covers a lot of territory in not too many pages. Here's a review by Mark Schlenze that I think captures a lot of it: --- From the premise that is…
…you've never heard of it, seek it out, it's fabulous! Edit: Since alecst has obviously already read Kabloona, I might as well give a few more that are on that "list": Winter Wheat by Mildred Walker, Goatwalking by Jim Corbett, and Hyssop by Kevin McIlvoy. Maybe you'd like one of them too.
This book was seriously influential to me in 1994 when a friend leant me his hard cover copy. Arguably, Out of Control, Snowcrash, (and a less well known book called Goatwalking) defined my whole early 20s aesthetic and outlook.
For those not familiar, "Goatwalking" is an amazing book. And it's back in print! Here's an article about the re-release: https://afriendlyletter.com/lets-go-goatwalking-friends/

> The net result is such a society could really only exist if protected by a great power. reminds me a bit of Jim Corbett's "Goatwalking".
