Hacker News

…people. Just as in the Brain. There is no one extraordinary neuron. Book recos - Niall Ferguson - The Square and the Tower - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07KKYostAJ0 Albert-László Barabási - The Formula Moises Naim - The end of power The Hierarchies of Skill and Domination will continue to face major pressure the likes they haven't seen in the past from ever changing network configurations.

[1] https://www.amazon.com/Formula-Universal-Laws-Success/dp/031...

…some valuable skills, but especially in careers where the performance can’t be ordered (e.g: art, design) the only thing that matters is to know people who are well known. [1] https://www.amazon.com/Formula-Universal-Laws-Success/dp/031...

[0] https://www.amazon.com/Formula-Universal-Laws-Success/dp/031...

…thesis of a recent book [0], summarized, more or less, as: "When there is no objective method to rate performance, then the social network becomes the measure of performance." [0] https://www.amazon.com/Formula-Universal-Laws-Success/dp/031...

I don't think anything would stop someone from publishing a great paper in physics or computer science on their own in 2021. Albert-Laszlo Barabasi's book The Formula is kind of about this. While nothing would stop an individual from publishing such a paper, outside a major company or university setting an individual wouldn't have the network to notice the paper basically.
