…Meditations on First Philosophy (The Cambridge University Press edition is very good; it's probably worth buying their Selected Philosophical Writings for a good basic Descartes text) David Hume: An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding and An Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals (I recommend the Oxford Philosophical Texts editions) Wittgenstein: Philosophical Investigations (terribly, terribly difficult, but very rewarding)…

…intentionally, or invent myriads of terms where it isn't really necessary. But there are plenty of writers, particularly in the "analytic" tradition, who write very clearly and succinctly. Try Hume (An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding -- short and high-impact), Russell, Rousseau, Searle, Putnam, or Dennett.

My favorite passage from David Hume's work `An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding` “Where am I, or what? From what causes do I derive my existence, and to what condition shall I return? ... I am confounded with all these questions, and begin to fancy myself in the most deplorable…

…Meditations gripping for the way he poses the question of whether there can be any solid foundation for knowledge and the resulting skeptical worries (though his solution is somewhat disappointing). Hume's Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding is also wonderful. If you find free will interesting, Kane's "A Contemporary Introduction to Free Will" is solid--it was the text a professor assigned when I ta'd for his course.

Although I had similar apprehensions before I started reading Hume, I have found his writing approachable. For "Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding", I found this edition with explanations of certain words/phrases by Jonathan Bennett very useful: https://www.earlymoderntexts.com/assets/pdfs/hume1748.pdf
