《The Rough Riders》(1899)

Hacker News

…willingly, often at great risk to themselves, and other than maybe Martin Luther King, or George Patton, he's probably the best political leader America has ever produced. (I recommend his book on the Rough Riders) His original involvemnent in politics was as a crusader against corruption, and he used his wealth for the one thing it should afford, which is to be able to stand by his principles. People are welcome…

Yeah I would have made it differently for sure. The statue's artist and promoters wanted it to be popular, and Roosevelt was a hero in part for his Rough Riders cavalry unit so I assumer they were trying to hit on that part of his life.

which book about the rough riders are you referring to? https://www.amazon.com/Rough-Riders-Theodore-Roosevelt/dp/16... ?

…against Spanish rule of Cuba, and promoted the war that included Roosevelt at the Battle of San Juan Hill. I'm not even sure that Roosevelt pointed out the attack with his sword. Quoting Roosevelt from "Rough Riders" at https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/13000 : } How Wood escaped being hit, I do not see, and still less how his horse escaped. I had left mine at the beginning of the action, and was only regretting…

In one of TR's books (perhaps Rough Riders?), he mentions watching Lincoln's funeral precession as a child, from his family home in New York.
