…but there are a wide variety of virus responses that show virulence and infectiousness aren't necessarily correlated. If anyone wants to read more about this I can't recommend highly enough the book Spillover by David Quammen, which was published in 2012, and covers zoonotic (animal-to-human transmission) viruses, including SARS. Reading the section on SARS made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It's…
https://www.amazon.com/Spillover-Animal-Infections-Human-Pan...
https://www.amazon.com/Spillover-Animal-Infections-Human-Pan... Is a good and accessible read on the subject. Though it won't do anything good for your ability to sleep.
…shingles. DNA has a double helix which has error-correction and is more stable. However that makes it also physically larger and more complicated. RNA is small, sloppy, and cheap. Source of all this: Spillover, David Quammen: https://www.amazon.com/Spillover-Animal-Infections-Human-Pan..., it's a good & topical book, a little bleak but good. There's a discussion of exactly this about halfway through the book.…
If you enjoyed this article, I strongly recommend the author's book (mentioned at the end - Spillover, by David Quammen). I am about half way through and finding it very interesting.
Definitely, highly recommended book. Learned of it from Quammen's "Spillover"[0] (a great — if somewhat terrifying — book in its own right) mentioning it as a source in the AIDS chapter and it was a fantastic read. Note that Quammen released his own AIDS-history book this hear,…
I've re-read Spillover by David Quammen and would heartily recommend it to anybody interested in where these pandemics come from and why they are happening now. On a lighter note: Good Omens by Neil Gaiman.
