故事发生在 2000 年初纽约市的上东区。当莫什费格笔下那位未透露姓名的年轻主人公开启为期一年的长眠时，她与他人的疏离感已近乎彻底，在此期间她极少与人交往。她的双亲已经离世；她与患有暴食症的闺蜜蕾娃（Reva）、前男友以及乱开药的精神科医生之间的关系皆不健康。随着服药量的加剧，她的孤立感以及抛弃尘世纷扰的决心也愈发坚定。与此同时，一种强效药物引发的危险失忆症也正对她造成困扰。
