…Einstein, Freud, and Darwin were revolutionizing modern thought, and Joyce was resolutely ignorant of them. People say, "What about all the symbolism? What about all the word play?" Again, I say, meh. Anna Karenina -- now that's a great novel.
……和他最著名的《The Castle》一样。Jan Potocki 的《The Manuscript Found in Saragossa》——一本迷幻的故事集，用多重嵌套的框架组织起来。Scott Fitzgerald 的《The Great Gatsby》。Leo Tolstoy 的《Anna Karenina》。还是和我五年前上一次读时记得的一样令人屏息。科幻：Gene Wolfe 的《The Book of the New Sun》。Wolfe 我以前没读过，结果发现他属于另一个层次……
…much as his most famous, The Castle. Jan Potocki, The Manuscript Found in Saragossa - a trippy collection of tales organised in multiple nested frames. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby. Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina. Still as breathtaking as I'd remembered it from the previous reading five years ago. Science Fiction: Gene Wolfe, The Book of the New Sun. Wolfe, whom I hadn't read before, turns out to be in a class…

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (I don't know which translation I read). Imagine the plot of three or four excellent movies woven together. It struck me how little human nature changes over time and across cultures.…

I am currently listening to Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, and it is by far the most interesting book I've read/listened to. I have been moved to tears again and again by this book. Growth of the Soil by Knut Hamsun (1917) just turned 100, and…
