The Algebraist is my favourite Iain M. Banks book too - the breadth of imagination in it is amazing I think Surface Detail is my favourite Culture novel. Many Iain Banks books (regular fiction as well as sci-fi) are really just wish-fulfillment stories, but they're so stylish and fun to read that I love them (plus there's…
Not sure how many new books I read last year, but Surface Detail by Iain M. Banks is the first thing that comes to mind. It's the latest book in the Culture universe; if you like sci-fi then I highly recommend it (though I don't know that Surface Detail is the best…
Speaking of VR escapism I think a cautionary read about the implications of truly advanced VR would be Iain Banks' Culture novel "Surface Detail". An IV, a coffin-sized apartment and... a virtual hell? Who decides when you wake up? If you wake up?
The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks, because it was my introduction to the Culture Novels as a whole. I have yet to find another world with such personality and richness, a close second would be Surface Detail of the same series, mainly because it hosts one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. Not everyone likes Banks' writing style, I personally love it, and his humor too, which is why I also purchased…
Iain Banks' "Surface Detail" would like to have a word with you. This author's books are great at putting these sort of moral ideas to test in a sci-fi context. This specific tome portraits virtual wars and virtual "hells". The…
I suspect it's been used in many places - we need to summon that quote investigator! - but I did make a note of this when I read Surface Detail by Iain M. Banks: "All you ever were was a little piece of the universe, thinking to itself."
