Iain M. Banks the Culture novels are wonderful, there are 9 of them. Peter F. Hamilton's Commonwealth universe and the new one Salvation are great. My favorite in the last 10 years or so is The Passage by Justin Cronin, when I started reading it felt like I was reading early Stephen King.
The best thing about the apocalypse that I have read is Justin Cronin's "The Passage" - book one of a trilogy, I'm a little way into book 2 "The Twelve". Although, if The Passage were to happen all your preparations would be for naught!

And he's gone through all of the glasses 'from the old days' his small community has in the storeroom and none…
