Best classical reference (yet somewhat more modern than Newton) is: How to make a telescope by Jean Texereau http://archive.org/details/HowToMakeATelescope
When I was a kid, I borrowed Jean Texreau's How to Make a Telescope from the library and read it from cover-to-cover many times.[1] I never did have the resources as a child to go ahead and actually build a telescope, but by reading the instructions I had the opportunity…
Thanks for the reminder. About 25? years ago I bought the book How to make a Telescope and two six-inch blanks and grinding materials and set off to grind my own mirror. I never finished (it was super boring and really humid in the basement of my rented apartment) and I have no idea where…
Silvering mirrors is coming back in fashion, either with the old recipe à la Jean Texereau / How to make a telescope, or with a spray silvering process. This week I silvered my last mirror with spray silvering, which was quite economical and convenient. I used 1.6g of silver nitrate for a 200mm mirror.
Edmund at least held on to the non-professional side of its optics business through Anchor Optical Supply. But yeah, I miss paging through the original catalogs. I think I still have the "How to make a Telescope" book although I lost the mirror blank several moves ago.
