…been different had the reporting not been quashed by D notices. I have to admit, I find surveillance extremely creepy, but then I translate it into my head into an Iain Banks novel. The great orbital in Look to Windward, is essentially governed by the AI Mind at its heart, which lets them all go freely about their business, yet saves them from peril. I like that world, and if I knew the ones who save me would never abuse…
Fourthing the Culture series. I've read most of them now and the highlights for me are Look To Windward, Player of Games and Fearsum Endjinn (stick with that one). I also rate Excession and Matter though I know a lot of other people think they're weaker. Atlas Shrugged has been called the 'second most…
Consider Phlebas and Look to Windward make a great matched pair. The first introduces the Culture and a bunch of crackling ideas around the beautiful fantasy of a post-scarcity, post-mortality, post-stupidity civilization. It's 31 years old…
Master and Margarita was on my list, maybe it will stay there a while. For insight into the minds of murderers x 4.5 billion + a few, I just finished Iain Banks' Look to Windward. I didn't think I saw what was coming when it came, but then at the end, I realized I knew it was there all along. The Culture series is underrepresented on this thread. Hello, Contact? Whenever it's…
It's one of my favorite series. IMHO the order to read them doesn't matter all that much, and Consider Phlebas probably isn't the easiest to get into it. Maybe start with Player of Games or Look To Windward.
The Culture series by Iain M. Banks. I actually randomly read Look to Windward years ago after being lent a copy. It stuck with me and recently started the series from the start. I'm up to Excession now. It's possibly the most "colourful" thing I've ever read. Often amazing, sometimes…
